A mum-of-two who died in a stabbing attack in west London on Monday has been named locally as Wafah Chkaifi.

Relatives who gathered to lay flowers at the scene in Maida Vale on Tuesday said the 43-year-old mature student died after being knifed during the school run.

She was stabbed up to ten times by a man, 41, who was then run over by a car as bystanders attempted to stop him.

He was freed from underneath the vehicle by the emergency services but died at the scene soon after.

Wafah’s heartbroken aunt Haida confirmed she also died during the attack, leaving two teenage sons aged 16 and 18.

She told MailOnline: ‘She had a heart of gold, she was a beautiful, wonderful girl. She had friends from all cultures and we are still trying to understand what all this is about. The whole family is shocked. Her mother has been taken to hospital because of this. It’s devastated us all.’

One of her sons, who also joined mourners at the site this morning, paid tribute.

He told the Evening Standard: ‘She didn’t deserve to die. Please keep her in your prayers. Everyone who knew her knew she was a good person.’

Her relatives said Wafah had lived in the area for many years and came from a large family of Moroccan descent.

Bystanders yesterday described seeing a hooded and masked man appeared to lie in wait in a park before pouncing on the woman as she walked down a nearby street. Police said the attacker was known to the victim.

Raad Jiyad, 52, told the Evening Standard that he had tried to distract the attacker despite the fact that he had a large knife.

He said: ‘I saw a man over a woman with a knife, I saw the blade. I heard her screaming in pain.

‘I wanted to try and make him come towards me instead to buy her some time. We tried to save her. He had this big knife so no-one wanted to go near.’

Onlookers said the attack only ended when the knifeman was hit by a car.

The driver, a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.
