Madeleine McCann suspect ‘was miles away’ when she vanished, new witness says

The main suspect in Madeleine McCann case was ‘miles away’ from the resort the little girl was taken from on the day she vanished, a new witness has said.

Christian Brueckner was named in June 2020 as the German police’s number one suspect for the kidnap and murder of Maddie – who disappeared from the Portuguese resort Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.

But now a woman who claims she was with Brueckner just before and after the kidnapping insists the convicted rapist was nowhere near the family then, The Sun reports.

The German woman said she was not with Brueckner on the day of the abduction but claims he was calm and normal when they were together afterwards.

She also added that the pair had been stopped by a police car at the time and no suspicious activity was flagged.

‘This testimony could be an issue,’ an anonymous source quoted by The Sun said.

This may certainly hinder prosecutors who were reportedly given ‘shocking’ evidence to help them take the case to court just last week.

A team working on a documentary about the disappearance of the then-three-year-old said they had proof that Brueckner was near Praia da Luz on the night of the abduction – completely contrary to this most recent report.

The crew from TV channel Sat.1 said they had found ‘many new clues and indications’ that he was behind the girl’s disappearance.

This was good news for prosecutors who have, so far, struggled to gather enough evidence to officially charge Brueckner.

Nevertheless, investigators are so sure they have the right man, they apparently sent an undercover officer into prison – where he is currently serving a seven-year sentence in prison for raping a 72-year-old American woman.

It was hoped that a police officer disguised as another inmate could get Brueckner to confess.

This is because the convicted sex offender is said to have opened up to a friend about Madeleine’s kidnapping while spending time with a friend in the Algarve, years later.

But the trap reportedly failed.

Prosecutors in Braunschweig have refused to comment on the supposed operation.

Brueckner is now in solitary confinement in a different jail.
